Substrate & Preparation: Foundation of Mushroom Growing Success
Pink oyster mushrooms fruiting from a mushroom grow bag
Substrate choice determines mushroom yields and contamination resistance. Proper preparation turns simple materials into perfect growing mediums for Oyster, Shiitake and Lion's Mane.
What is Mushroom Substrate?
Substrate provides nutrients and structure for mycelium colonisation. Unlike soil for plants, mushroom substrates get fully consumed during growth. Common types include:
Hardwood sawdust (Shiitake, Lion's Mane)
Wheat straw (Oyster mushrooms)
Coffee grounds (quick experiments)
Cardboard or hemp hurd (eco-friendly)
Best Substrates by Mushroom Type
Blue Oyster: Straw, coffee, hardwood sawdust (fast colonisation)
Lion's Mane: Hardwood sawdust (natural wood preference)
Shiitake: Oak sawdust (traditional log mimic)
Chestnut: Straw/hardwood sawdust mix (meaty texture needs nutrition)
Pasteurisation vs Sterilisation
Pasteurisation kills competitors while preserving beneficial microbes:
Hot water bath (60-80°C for 1-2 hours)
Lime bath (straw only)
Cold fermentation
Sterilisation eliminates everything (lab-grade):
Pressure cooker (15 PSI, 90+ minutes)
Perfect for grain spawn and sensitive cultures
Step-by-Step Straw Pasteurisation
Chop straw to 5-10cm lengths
Soak overnight in cold water
Drain and load into pillowcase to allow for drip dying after hot water dip
Hot water dip 70°C for 90 minutes
DripDrain completely and cool to room temp
Mix spawn at 5-10% rate
Sawdust Substrate Recipe
Perfect for most wood-loving species:
5kg hardwood sawdust
0.5-1kg wheat bran (nutrition boost)
0.2kg gypsum (pH buffer)
Water to field capacity
Mixing: Combine dry ingredients, add water gradually until it holds shape but no water drips. Fill grow bags and sterilise.
Field Capacity Test
Squeeze substrate firmly:
Few drops = Perfect
Water pours = Too wet
No drops = Too dry
Contamination Prevention
Work in still air box or flow hood
Flame sterilise tools between use
Wear gloves, spray 70% alcohol
Use liquid cultures for fast colonisation
Substrate Mixing Ratios
Oyster: 100% straw or 100% hardwood sawdust
Shiitake: 20% straw, 70% hardwood sawdust, 10% bran
Lion's Mane: 90% hardwood sawdust, 10% bran
Storage & Timing
Pasteurised substrate: Use within 24 hours
Sterilised bags: Store 1-2 weeks before inoculation
Always label with date and contents.
Troubleshooting Substrate Issues
Wet spots: Improve drainage, less water
Sour smell: Repasteurise immediately or start fresh ideally
Slow colonisation: Check temperatures and light levels
Green mould: Improve sterile technique next batch
