Blue Chanterelle
Premium Blue Chanterelle Mushroom (Polyozellus multiplex) Liquid Culture by Artisan Mushrooms
Premium Blue Chanterelle (Polyozellus multiplex) liquid culture supplies robust, outdoor-adapted genetics for successful woodland establishment. Known for its deep indigo coloration and nuanced flavour, Blue Chanterelle is a prized rarity in gourmet cuisine with a unique earthy aroma. This species cannot be cultivated indoors, wild simulation and forest planting are essential for fruitful mycelial development.
Making Sawdust Spawn for Forest Planting
(For convenience, Artisan Mushrooms also supplies ready-to-use grow bags & sawdust substrates in our shop to start your spawn/grain spawn or below are methods to make your own substrate)
Preparing Hardwood Sawdust Substrate
Start with high-quality hardwood sawdust (such as oak, beech, or alder) free from contaminants and chemicals. Adjust the moisture content to field capacity - the substrate should feel damp like a wrung-out sponge, with no free water pooling when squeezed. Supplement with 5-10% wheat bran or soybean hulls to provide additional nutrients for robust mycelial growth.
Sterilisation: Load substrate into autoclave bags or jars and sterilise in a pressure cooker at 15 PSI for 3 hours. This eliminates competing organisms for clean, aggressive colonisation.
Pasteurisation (for direct outdoor use): Heat substrate to 65-80°C for 90 minutes using hot water bath or steam, then cool completely. This gentler method preserves beneficial microbes while reducing pathogens.
Inoculation Process
Allow sterilised or pasteurised substrate to cool to room temperature (below 30°C) to protect the liquid culture mycelium. Using a sterile technique, inject 5-10 ml of Blue Chanterelle liquid culture per 2 kilogram of substrate.
Incubation Conditions
Maintain incubation at 8-18°C (46-65°F) in a clean, dark environment with fresh air exchange. Blue chanterelle mycelium grows slowly but steadily, producing fine white threads that spread from inoculation points.
Full colonisation typically takes 4-8 weeks, depending on temperature and substrate nutrition. Monitor daily for white mycelial coverage across the entire substrate surface with no green, black, or off-odours indicating contamination.
Forest Bed Preparation & Application
Select moist coniferous forest sites beneath Douglas fir, pine, spruce, or hemlock where natural leaf litter and decaying wood accumulate. Clear minimal surface debris to expose forest floor without disturbing soil structure.
Apply colonised spawn by spreading 1-2 kg per square metre, blending directly into:
Decaying wood chips or logs
5-10 cm deep leaf litter layers
Moist forest soil enriched with organic matter
Work spawn into the top 10-15 cm of soil around tree root zones to facilitate mycorrhizal connections.
Long-Term Maintenance & Monitoring
Mulch heavily with 5-10 cm of native leaf litter, pine needles, or wood chips immediately after application to retain moisture, moderate temperature swings, and protect mycelium from drying.
Maintain consistent humidity (70-90%) through natural rainfall supplemented by gentle watering during dry periods—avoid overhead irrigation that compacts soil. Check moisture by digging small test holes; substrate should remain damp but not waterlogged.
Monitor for chanterelle fruiting 1-3 seasons after establishment, typically late summer through autumn in cool, humid conditions. Success depends on site compatibility and minimal disturbance.
What's Included
10ml liquid culture syringe containing living mycelium of Blue Chanterelle (Polyozellus multiplex)
Sterile alcohol wipe
18G sterile needle for infusion into hardwood sawdust or direct woodland inoculation
Sealed in a zip lock bag
Storage
For optimal results, use Blue Chanterelle liquid culture soon after arrival. Store refrigerated at 4°C for up to 3 months if necessary.
Artisan Mushrooms guarantees all cultures are fresh, potent, and contamination-free.
What is Liquid Culture
Liquid culture is a nutrient-rich blend of distilled water, malt extract, dextrose, and honey, fostering healthy and resilient mycelium. Use liquid culture to inoculate sterilised or pasteurised hardwood sawdust or grow bags - an essential step for outdoor Blue Chanterelle cultivation.
Artisan Mushrooms cultures are routinely lab-tested for purity and vigour.
