Colonisation Temperature: 12°C - 22°C (54°F - 72°F)
Pinning Humidity: Consistently high; maintain natural woodland moisture
Fruiting Temperature: 8°C - 18°C (46°F - 65°F)
Fruiting Humidity: 85 - 95%
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
10ml liquid culture syringe containing living mycelium of Hedgehog mushroom (Hydnum repandum)
Sterile alcohol wipe
18G sterile needle for application to your outdoor substrate or prepared planting bed
Sealed in a zip lock bag
WHAT IS LIQUID CULTURE?
Liquid culture is a nutrient-rich broth made from distilled water, light malt extract, and dextrose, sometimes blended with natural honey. It supports healthy and rapid mycelial expansion—the “seed” for inoculating your spawn.
OUTDOOR FOREST PLANTING TECHNIQUE
Inoculate Hardwood Sawdust:
Prepare hardwood sawdust substrate by adjusting moisture to field capacity and sterilising or pasteurising it for best results. Once cooled, inoculated the sawdust in breathable bags or containers at 12°C - 22°C (54°F - 72°F) for 2-4 weeks, allowing white mycelium to colonise the substrate.Select Site:
Choose a shaded, moist woodland location beneath mature broadleaf trees (such as oak, beech, or birch) where soil is rich and undisturbed.Prepare Planting Area:
Spread a thin layer of the colonised hardwood sawdust over the selected forest floor or plant it in holes, combining it with wood chips or leaf litter to help expand the mycelial network.Mulch & Maintenance:
Cover the inoculated area with leaf litter and branches to retain moisture and recreate the mushroom’s natural habitat. Water gently during dry spells to maintain humidity.Establishment Period:
The mycelium will continue spreading into the surrounding soil and debris over several months. White mycelial growth under leaf litter indicates successful colonisation.Harvesting:
Expect fruiting to begin in autumn, with toothy Hedgehog mushrooms appearing annually once the colony is established and conditions are right.
STORAGE
Use your Hedgehog liquid culture promptly for highest viability. If delayed, refrigerate at 4°C for up to 3 months.
All cultures from Artisan Mushrooms Ireland are tested for purity and robust growth in lab-controlled conditions before dispatch.
Each order is freshly prepared and packaged under sterile conditions using laminar flow hoods for reliable results.
