Are the four cultures mixed together?
No. Each Hericium culture is supplied in its own clearly labelled syringe.

Label every grain bag, agar plate and fruiting block carefully to prevent the different cultures from becoming confused.
What is the difference between the four Lion’s Mane cultures?

What substrate is best for Lion’s Mane mushrooms?

Can I inject the liquid culture directly into a hardwood grow bag?
Yes. Each culture can be injected directly into a Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag.
A basic inoculation process is:
Clean your hands and working surface.
Gently shake the syringe to distribute the mycelium.
Attach a new sterile needle.
Wipe the injection port with the supplied alcohol wipe.
Allow the alcohol to evaporate.
Insert the needle through the centre of the injection port.
Inject the culture into several nearby areas of the substrate.
Carefully withdraw the needle.
Leave the bag sealed during colonisation.
Do not inject through the filter patch or directly through the plastic bag.
Can I use sterilised grain before transferring Lion’s Mane to hardwood substrate?
Yes. Producing grain spawn before inoculating hardwood substrate is a common cultivation method.
Inject the liquid culture into a 2 kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag and allow the grain to become fully colonised.
The colonised grain can then be mixed with:

Both methods can work successfully.
Direct liquid culture inoculation is usually simpler because:

How much liquid culture should I use?
Approximately 5 to 10 ml of liquid culture can be used to inoculate one 2 kg grain or hardwood grow bag.
A full syringe may be used for one bag. A smaller amount can also be used if you want to test the culture on agar or inoculate more than one container.
Using excessive liquid will not necessarily produce faster growth and may create overly wet areas in the grain or substrate.
Always use a fresh 18G Sterile Syringe Needle when inoculating a new culture or grow bag.
Should I test the cultures on agar before using them?
Testing liquid culture on agar is recommended, particularly before inoculating a large quantity of grain or substrate.
Place one or two small drops onto a sterile LME Agar Plate and observe the developing growth.
Healthy Hericium mycelium should normally appear white or cream-coloured. It may initially appear fine, translucent or wispy before becoming denser.
Agar can also be used to:

What does healthy Lion’s Mane mycelium look like?
Healthy Lion’s Mane mycelium is normally white or cream-coloured.

Dense and white once established
Lion’s Mane mycelium can be less visually obvious than oyster mushroom mycelium. Small areas of light growth may gradually develop into a fully colonised block.

What temperature should the cultures be kept at during colonisation?
Most Lion’s Mane and Hericium cultures colonise well at approximately 20°C to 24°C.
The Heat Tolerant Lion’s Mane culture can generally cope better with warmer conditions, but excessive heat should still be avoided.

What temperature is best for fruiting Lion’s Mane?
Many Lion’s Mane cultures fruit well at approximately 15°C to 21°C.
The ideal range can vary between the four cultures. The Heat Tolerant Lion’s Mane strain may perform better at warmer temperatures than the standard culture.
Stable conditions are generally more important than maintaining one exact temperature. Sudden temperature changes, excessive heat and dry airflow can negatively affect fruiting-body development.
How long does Lion’s Mane take to colonise?
Visible mycelium may appear within several days, although some Hericium cultures can take one to two weeks to become clearly visible.
Complete colonisation of a grain or hardwood bag may take approximately three to eight weeks.

Should I break up or mix a Lion’s Mane grow bag?

A hardwood fruiting block normally does not need to be aggressively broken apart. It should generally be allowed to colonise and consolidate into a firm block.
Excessive handling may:

Lion’s Mane may sometimes begin forming small fruiting bodies inside the sealed bag. This can indicate that the block is ready to be moved into fruiting conditions.
What fruiting conditions do Lion’s Mane mushrooms require?

Relative humidity is commonly maintained at approximately 85% to 95% while fruiting.
Fresh-air exchange is particularly important. High carbon dioxide levels can cause elongated, coral-like or poorly formed mushrooms instead of compact fruiting bodies with well-developed spines.
How do I fruit a colonised hardwood grow bag?
Once the block is fully colonised:
Move it into suitable fruiting conditions.
Choose an area where the mycelium is strong and healthy.
Cut a small X-shaped opening in the side of the bag.
Press excess air from the bag so the plastic remains close to the block.
Maintain high humidity and regular fresh-air exchange.
Avoid spraying water directly onto developing mushrooms.
Harvest when the spines have elongated but before the mushroom becomes discoloured or overly soft.
Lion’s Mane generally fruits more successfully from a small opening than from a completely removed bag.
Why is my Lion’s Mane growing in a coral-like shape?
Coral-like or highly branched growth is often associated with insufficient fresh-air exchange or elevated carbon dioxide levels.
Improving fresh-air exchange can encourage more compact fruiting bodies with longer, better-defined spines.
However, Bear’s Head and Lion’s Pride naturally have more branched growth than classic Lion’s Mane. Their appearance should not be expected to match the rounded form of Hericium erinaceus exactly.
Why are the spines on my Lion’s Mane short?
Short or poorly developed spines may be caused by:
Insufficient fresh-air exchange
Low humidity
Excessively high temperatures
A young fruiting body that is not ready to harvest
Dry airflow directed at the mushroom
Differences between Hericium species or strains
Spines usually become longer as the fruiting body matures. Avoid harvesting immediately after the mushroom first forms.
What makes the Heat Tolerant Lion’s Mane different?
Heat Tolerant Lion’s Mane is a selected Hericium erinaceus culture intended to perform more reliably under warmer growing conditions than many standard Lion’s Mane strains.

Heat tolerant does not mean heatproof. Very high temperatures can still slow growth, dry the substrate or negatively affect fruiting.

What is Lion’s Pride?
Lion’s Pride is an Hericium americanum culture selected for vigorous growth and distinctive Hericium fruiting characteristics.
It may produce branched or clustered fruiting bodies rather than the single rounded form commonly associated with classic Lion’s Mane.
Environmental conditions still have a major influence on the final shape and density of the mushrooms.
Can Lion’s Mane be grown outdoors?
Yes. Hericium species can be cultivated outdoors on suitable hardwood logs, stumps or prepared hardwood materials.
Suitable woods may include:
Beech
Oak
Maple
Birch
Other clean, untreated hardwoods
Outdoor cultivation is slower and less predictable than indoor bag cultivation. Colonisation and fruiting may take many months or longer.
Avoid painted, chemically treated, rotten or contaminated wood.
Can I inject the liquid culture directly into logs?
Directly injecting liquid culture into logs is possible, but it is generally less reliable than using established plug spawn or sawdust spawn.
Logs contain a large volume of material and naturally occurring microorganisms. Established spawn provides more mycelium and a greater number of inoculation points.
A practical method is to use the liquid culture to produce grain or sawdust spawn first and then use the established spawn to inoculate logs.
How should the liquid cultures be stored?
Store the syringes in a refrigerator at approximately 2°C to 4°C until required.
For best results:
Keep each syringe sealed
Do not freeze
Protect from direct sunlight
Avoid repeated warming and refrigeration
Keep the labels attached
Store separately from food where practical
Use the cultures as soon as reasonably possible
Allow a refrigerated syringe to warm slightly before inoculation and gently shake it to distribute the mycelium.
How long will the cultures remain viable?
