Red Reishi is also commonly known as Lingzhi, Lacquered Bracket or Varnished Conk. It produces firm, woody fruiting bodies with glossy red, orange-red or reddish-brown upper surfaces.

Young growth normally begins white or cream before developing yellow, orange and deep red bands as it matures.

Unlike gilled mushrooms, Red Reishi releases spores through fine pores on the underside of its mature fruiting body.

Is Red Reishi the same as Lingzhi?

Red Reishi and Lingzhi are names commonly used for closely related lacquered mushrooms within the genus Ganoderma.

The names Ganoderma lucidum and Ganoderma lingzhi have both been widely used within cultivation and commercial mushroom literature.

Modern fungal taxonomy distinguishes the cultivated East Asian Lingzhi, often identified as Ganoderma lingzhi, from European Ganoderma lucidum. However, Ganoderma lucidum remains widely used as the commercial scientific name for Red Reishi.

How is Red Reishi different from Black Reishi?

Black Reishi is Ganoderma sinense and typically produces darker brown, purple-brown or nearly black fruiting bodies.

After inoculation, keep the bag sealed while the Red Reishi mycelium colonises the substrate.

Direct inoculation is the simplest option for growers who do not want to produce separate grain spawn.

Producing grain spawn first can provide faster and more even colonisation because each colonised grain creates an additional inoculation point throughout the final hardwood substrate.

Can Red Reishi liquid culture be used on grain?

Yes. Sterilised grain is commonly used to expand Red Reishi mycelium before transferring it to hardwood substrate.

The liquid culture can be injected into our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag.

Allow the grain to become fully colonised before mixing it with our 2kg Sterilised Hardwood and Wheat Bran Substrate.

Grain is normally used as an expansion medium rather than as the complete Red Reishi fruiting substrate.

Using prepared grain and substrate removes the need to hydrate, mix and pressure sterilise the growing media yourself.

A typical grain-to-hardwood cultivation process is:

  1. Inoculate a pre-sterilised grain bag with Red Reishi liquid culture.

  2. Allow the grain to become fully colonised.

  3. Mix the colonised grain spawn with sterilised hardwood and wheat bran substrate.

  4. Allow the hardwood substrate to become completely colonised.

  5. Give the block additional time to consolidate.

  6. Introduce warm fruiting conditions with high humidity and gentle lighting.

  7. Manage fresh-air exchange according to the preferred fruiting shape.

Is Red Reishi suitable for beginners?

Yes. Red Reishi can be suitable for beginners, particularly when a prepared hardwood grow bag is used.

Red Reishi mycelium is generally vigorous, and its fruiting bodies develop slowly. Their firm, woody structure makes them less vulnerable to brief humidity fluctuations than soft mushrooms such as Oyster mushrooms.

The main challenges are:

  • Allowing complete substrate colonisation

  • Maintaining warm but stable temperatures

  • Providing high humidity during early fruiting

  • Managing fresh-air exchange

  • Providing sufficient lighting

  • Allowing several weeks for the mushrooms to mature

  • Managing heavy spore release from mature caps

How should I store the liquid culture?

Keep the Red Reishi liquid culture syringe refrigerated at approximately 2°C to 4°C until you are ready to use it.

Do not freeze it.

For the best viability, use the culture within three months of receiving it.

Before inoculation, allow the syringe to move closer to room temperature and shake it gently to distribute the Red Reishi mycelium throughout the nutrient solution.

Keep the protective cap fitted during storage. Attach a new sterile needle immediately before inoculating grain, agar or a hardwood grow bag.

How much liquid culture should I use?

The amount of liquid culture required depends on the size and type of growing medium.

For one of our sterile LME agar plates, one or two small drops are normally sufficient.

A small grain jar may require approximately 1 to 2 ml.

When inoculating our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag or Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag, approximately 5 to 10 ml can be used.

Using too much liquid culture can introduce excess moisture into the grain or substrate and increase the risk of bacterial contamination.

Does the syringe contain mushroom spores?

No. Red Reishi liquid culture contains living Ganoderma lucidum mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution.

It is not a mushroom spore solution.

Because the mycelium is already actively growing, liquid culture can begin colonising a suitable medium without waiting for spores to germinate.

The culture can be used to inoculate sterilised grain, hardwood substrate or a sterile LME agar plate.

Can I test Red Reishi liquid culture on agar?

Yes. Testing the culture on agar allows you to observe its growth before inoculating a larger grain or substrate bag.

Place one or two small drops onto one of our sterile LME agar plates.

Keep the plate sealed and monitor the mycelium as it spreads from the inoculation point.

Healthy Red Reishi mycelium is normally white or cream. It may become dense, cottony or slightly leathery as the culture matures.

Do not open a colonised agar plate outside a clean working environment. Exposure to ordinary room air can introduce mould spores and bacteria.

What conditions does Red Reishi need to colonise?

Red Reishi generally colonises well under warm conditions.

Suitable starting conditions include:

  • Temperatures of approximately 24°C to 29°C

  • Darkness or low ambient light

  • A clean and stable incubation area

  • Filtered gas exchange

  • No direct sunlight

  • Properly hydrated substrate

  • Minimal disturbance during early growth

Red Reishi can grow rapidly near the upper part of this temperature range, but prolonged excessive heat should be avoided.

Actively growing mycelium produces heat, so the internal temperature of a large grain or substrate bag can be higher than the surrounding room.

Leaving space between colonising bags can help prevent heat from becoming trapped.

What does healthy Red Reishi mycelium look like?

Healthy Red Reishi mycelium normally appears white or cream-coloured.

As it colonises grain or hardwood substrate, it may develop:

  • Fine white strands

  • Cotton-like growth

  • Dense white patches

  • Thick surface mycelium

  • A firm or leathery outer layer

  • Pale yellow or tan pigmentation

The red colour develops mainly in the fruiting body. Healthy colonising mycelium does not need to appear red.

Green, black, pink or strongly foul-smelling growth may indicate contamination.

A healthy colonised bag should smell earthy or mushroom-like rather than sour, fermented or rotten.

How long does Red Reishi take to colonise?

Colonisation time depends on temperature, culture vigour, inoculation rate, substrate density and bag size.

A grain bag may require approximately two to five weeks to become fully colonised.

A supplemented hardwood block may require approximately four to eight weeks or longer.

The visible outside of the block may become white before the centre is completely colonised. Allow sufficient time for the mycelium to spread throughout the entire substrate.

Red Reishi fruiting bodies develop slowly compared with Oyster mushrooms. Even after colonisation is complete, they may require several additional weeks or months to mature.

Does Red Reishi need a maturation period?

Yes. A fully colonised Red Reishi block can benefit from additional time to consolidate before fruiting.

During this period, the mycelium continues breaking down the hardwood and developing a strong network throughout the substrate.

Keep the bag sealed and continue providing filtered gas exchange.

A mature block should:

  • Be colonised throughout

  • Feel firm and well held together

  • Contain no large loose areas

  • Contain no wet, uncolonised sections

  • Smell clean and mushroom-like

  • Show no spreading mould

The exact maturation period varies according to the culture, growing temperature and substrate composition.

What conditions does Red Reishi need to fruit?

Red Reishi generally performs well under warm and humid fruiting conditions.

High humidity is particularly important while primordia and soft white growing margins are developing.

The fruiting bodies should not remain continuously wet. Persistent surface moisture combined with poor ventilation can cause bacterial damage.

Does Red Reishi require light?

Yes. Red Reishi can produce long antler-shaped fruiting bodies when carbon dioxide remains elevated and fresh-air exchange is restricted.

A practical antler-growing method is:

  1. Allow the hardwood block to colonise and consolidate completely.

  2. Leave sufficient air space above the substrate inside the bag.

  3. Keep the top of the bag closed or loosely folded.

  4. Allow filtered gas exchange through the filter patch.

  5. Maintain warm temperatures and high humidity.

  6. Provide gentle indirect lighting.

  7. Allow the fruiting structures to grow upwards inside the bag.

  8. Avoid opening the bag completely during early antler formation.

Do not seal the bag completely without a filter patch. Red Reishi still requires oxygen even when carbon dioxide is being retained.

How do I encourage Red Reishi to form shelf-shaped caps?

Broad, shelf-shaped caps are encouraged by stronger fresh-air exchange and lower carbon dioxide levels.

Once antlers or early fruiting structures have formed:

  1. Open the top of the bag or make a controlled fruiting cut.

  2. Increase fresh-air exchange gradually.

  3. Maintain high surrounding humidity.

  4. Continue providing gentle indirect light.

  5. Avoid strong airflow directly against the fruiting bodies.

  6. Allow the pale growing tips to flatten and widen.

As carbon dioxide levels fall, the fruiting structures may begin expanding into fan-shaped or kidney-shaped caps.

The caps should gradually develop their characteristic red and reddish-brown lacquered surfaces.

How should the grow bag be opened for fruiting?

The correct method depends on the fruiting shape you want.

For antler-shaped growth, keep the bag mostly closed and leave sufficient air space above the substrate.

For shelf-shaped caps, open the top of the bag or make a controlled opening beside the developing fruiting structure.

Red Reishi can also be side-fruited. A small side opening may encourage the fruiting body to grow horizontally in a natural shelf-like form.

Why is my Red Reishi only producing antlers?

Antler growth is normally caused by elevated carbon dioxide and restricted fresh-air exchange.

This is a normal Reishi growth form and does not indicate that the culture has failed.

To encourage broad caps:

  • Increase fresh-air exchange.

  • Open the top of the bag.

  • Make a controlled opening beside the developing antlers.

  • Maintain high humidity after increasing ventilation.

  • Continue providing indirect light.

  • Avoid strong, drying airflow.

The antler tips may gradually flatten and widen after carbon dioxide levels decrease.

Why is my Red Reishi producing caps instead of antlers?

Cap development normally occurs when the culture receives stronger fresh-air exchange.

Lower carbon dioxide encourages the fruiting body to widen rather than continue growing as a narrow antler.

To encourage antler-shaped growth:

  • Reduce unnecessary ventilation.

  • Keep the grow bag mostly closed.

Why are the growing tips white?

White or cream growing tips are normal on actively developing Red Reishi.

The newest tissue begins pale before gradually developing yellow, orange, red or reddish-brown colouring.

A broad pale margin generally indicates that the fruiting body is still expanding.

As growth slows and the mushroom approaches maturity, the pale margin may become narrower and the darker lacquered colour may extend towards the outer edge.

When does Red Reishi develop its red colour?

Young Red Reishi fruiting structures may begin white or cream.

As they mature, they can gradually develop:

  • Pale yellow bands

  • Bright yellow growth

  • Orange sections

  • Red areas

Use a clean, sturdy knife or pruning tool to cut the fruiting body close to the substrate.

Reishi fruiting bodies are tough and may be difficult to remove by twisting.

How long does Red Reishi take to mature?

Red Reishi develops slowly compared with Oyster mushrooms and many other cultivated species.

After the first primordia appear, the fruiting bodies may require approximately six to twelve weeks or longer to mature.

The exact period depends on:

  • Temperature

  • Humidity

  • Fresh-air exchange

  • Lighting

  • Substrate size

  • Available nutrition

  • Culture genetics

  • Whether antlers or broad caps are being produced

  • The desired harvest size

Stable environmental conditions generally produce better results than frequent major changes.

Can a Red Reishi block produce more than one flush?

Yes. A healthy Red Reishi block may produce additional growth after the first harvest.

After harvesting:

  1. Remove loose fruiting-body material from the opening.

  2. Allow the block to rest.

  3. Keep it in a clean environment.

  4. Maintain moderate humidity.

  5. Prevent the substrate from drying completely.

  6. Return the block to warm fruiting conditions.

  7. Adjust fresh-air exchange according to the desired fruiting shape.

Later flushes may be smaller or slower than the first.

The number of flushes depends on the moisture, cleanliness and nutrition remaining in the block.

Can Red Reishi be cultivated on logs?

Yes. Red Reishi can be cultivated on suitable deciduous hardwood logs or stumps.

Potential hardwoods include:

  • Oak

  • Beech

  • Maple

  • Poplar

  • Willow

  • Alder

  • Birch

  • Other clean and untreated broadleaf wood

A basic log method is:

  1. Select recently cut, untreated hardwood logs.

  2. Prevent the logs from drying excessively.

  3. Drill inoculation holes in a staggered pattern.

  4. Pack fully colonised sawdust spawn into the holes.

  5. Seal the holes with food-safe wax.

  6. Keep the logs in a shaded and humid location.

  7. Maintain moisture during prolonged dry weather.

  8. Allow sufficient time for the fungus to colonise the wood.

  9. Wait for suitable warm and humid conditions to encourage fruiting.

Log cultivation may take one or more years and should be viewed as a long-term project.

Can a colonised hardwood grow bag be used to inoculate logs?

Yes. A fully colonised Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag can be used as sawdust-based inoculation material for suitable hardwood logs.

Once the bag is fully colonised:

  1. Open it in a clean working area.

  2. Break the colonised material into manageable pieces.

  3. Pack it firmly into drilled holes in the log.

  4. Seal the holes with food-safe wax.

  5. Place the logs in a shaded location.

  6. Prevent the wood from drying completely.

Outdoor log cultivation is slower and less predictable than indoor cultivation on sterilised hardwood blocks.

Can I inoculate a living tree?

Do not deliberately inoculate a healthy living tree.

Red Reishi is a wood-decaying fungus and may contribute to internal decay and structural weakness.

Use:

  • Dead hardwood logs

  • Cut stumps

  • Sterilised hardwood blocks

  • Wood sections that are no longer attached to a living tree

Do not inoculate valuable garden trees, street trees, trees near buildings or trees that could create a safety risk if weakened.

Always obtain the landowner’s permission before inoculating outdoor logs or stumps.

Can Red Reishi be grown on CVG?

CVG should not be used as the main Red Reishi substrate.

Coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum retain moisture but do not provide the woody nutrition required by this species.

Red Reishi should be cultivated on a substrate based primarily on hardwood sawdust, hardwood chips or solid wood.

CVG is not required as a casing layer because Red Reishi fruits directly from colonised woody substrate.

Can Red Reishi be grown on straw?

Straw alone is not the preferred substrate for Red Reishi.

The species is naturally adapted to decaying wood and generally performs better on hardwood sawdust or solid hardwood.

Straw and other agricultural materials may be included in experimental substrate formulations, but hardwood should remain the primary structural material.

For a practical cultivation process, use sterilised grain followed by supplemented hardwood sawdust.
