What is Reishi liquid culture?
Reishi liquid culture contains living Ganoderma mycelium suspended in a sterile, nutrient-rich liquid.
Because the mycelium is already established, it can begin colonising suitable grain or hardwood substrate once inoculated. This is generally faster and more predictable than beginning with spores.

Are the five cultures mixed together?
No. Each Reishi variety is supplied in its own clearly labelled syringe.
The cultures should not normally be mixed together. Each syringe contains a separate Ganoderma species or variety with its own growth pattern, appearance and fruiting characteristics.
Keeping the cultures separate allows you to compare them and maintain each culture individually.
What is the difference between the Reishi varieties?
The collection includes five distinct Reishi cultures:
Red Reishi produces the familiar glossy reddish-brown growth associated with cultivated Reishi mushrooms.
Black Reishi produces darker fruiting bodies and represents a different Ganoderma species.

Can I inject the liquid culture directly into a hardwood grow bag?
Yes. Reishi liquid culture can be injected directly into a Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag.
A basic inoculation process is:
Clean your hands and working surface.
Gently shake the syringe to distribute the mycelium.
Attach a new sterile needle.
Wipe the injection port with the supplied alcohol wipe.
Allow the alcohol to evaporate.
Insert the needle through the centre of the injection port.
Inject the culture into several nearby areas of the substrate.
Carefully remove the needle.
Leave the grow bag sealed during colonisation.
Do not inject through the plastic or filter patch.
Can I use sterilised grain before transferring Reishi to hardwood substrate?
Yes. Producing grain spawn first is a common cultivation method.
Inject the Reishi liquid culture into a 2 kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag and allow the grain to become fully colonised.
The colonised grain can then be mixed with:

Is direct liquid-culture inoculation or grain spawn better?
Both methods can work.
Direct liquid-culture inoculation is usually simpler because:

No grain preparation is required
Fewer transfers are involved
Less specialist equipment is needed
The risk of contamination from opening the bag is reduced
Using grain spawn first can provide:
More inoculation points throughout the substrate
Faster and more even hardwood colonisation

Direct inoculation is convenient for beginners, while grain spawn is often preferred by experienced growers producing multiple fruiting blocks.
How much liquid culture should I use?
Approximately 5 to 10 ml of liquid culture can be used to inoculate one 2 kg grain or hardwood grow bag.
A full syringe may be used for one bag. Alternatively, a smaller amount can be used if you want to test or expand the culture first.
Using excessive liquid does not guarantee faster colonisation and can create overly wet areas in the substrate.
Always use a fresh 18G Sterile Syringe Needle when inoculating a new bag or culture.
Should I test the cultures on agar before using them?
Testing liquid culture on agar is recommended, especially before inoculating a large amount of grain or substrate.
Place one or two small drops of liquid culture onto a sterile LME Agar Plate and observe the developing growth.
Healthy Reishi mycelium should normally appear white or cream-coloured. Agar testing can help identify mould, bacteria or unusual growth before the culture is used for a larger cultivation project.

What does healthy Reishi mycelium look like?
Healthy Reishi mycelium is generally white or cream-coloured.
Depending on the species and stage of growth, it may appear:

Patchy during early colonisation
Firm and solid once fully established
Older Reishi mycelium can sometimes develop yellow, tan or amber colouring. Small amber-coloured droplets may also form on heavily colonised substrate.
Green, black, pink or strongly discoloured spreading growth may indicate contamination.
What temperature should Reishi be kept at during colonisation?
Many Reishi cultures colonise well in warm conditions of approximately 24°C to 28°C.
The exact preferred temperature can vary between the five species, so a stable indoor environment is generally more important than maintaining one exact temperature.

How long does Reishi take to colonise?

Visible mycelium may begin appearing within several days or may take one to two weeks. Complete colonisation of a grain or hardwood bag can take approximately four to twelve weeks.

Should I mix or break up a Reishi grow bag?

A hardwood fruiting block normally does not need to be aggressively broken up. It is generally allowed to colonise and consolidate into a firm block.
Excessive handling can:

What fruiting conditions do Reishi mushrooms require?

What is the difference between antler and conk Reishi?
Antler Reishi forms elongated, branching fruiting bodies that resemble deer antlers.
Conk Reishi develops wider, fan-shaped or shelf-like caps.

Can Reishi be grown outdoors?

Outdoor cultivation is generally slower and less predictable than indoor bag cultivation. Colonisation and fruiting may take many months or longer.
Hemlock Reishi is naturally associated with coniferous hosts, while the other varieties are generally cultivated using suitable hardwood materials.
Avoid using chemically treated, painted or contaminated wood.
Can I use the liquid cultures to inoculate logs directly?
Direct liquid-culture inoculation of logs is possible but is generally less reliable than using colonised wooden dowels, sawdust spawn or established grain spawn.
Logs contain a large volume of material and naturally occurring microorganisms. Established spawn usually provides more mycelium and more inoculation points than liquid culture alone.
A practical approach is to use the culture to produce grain or sawdust spawn first and then use the established spawn for log inoculation.
How should the Reishi liquid cultures be stored?
Store the syringes in a refrigerator at approximately 2°C to 4°C until required.
For best results:
Keep each syringe sealed
Do not freeze
Protect from direct sunlight
Avoid repeated warming and refrigeration
Keep the culture label attached
Use the cultures as soon as reasonably possible
Store separately from food where practical
Allow a refrigerated syringe to warm slightly before inoculation and gently shake it to distribute the mycelium.
How long will the liquid cultures remain viable?
For best performance, use the cultures within approximately three months of receipt.
Properly refrigerated cultures may remain viable for longer, but growth can gradually weaken over time. Storage life varies according to the species, culture age and temperature stability.

Can I expand each Reishi liquid culture?
Yes. Each culture can be expanded using sterile liquid-culture media or agar.
However, culture expansion requires:
