What is the scientific name of Black Reishi?
The scientific name for Black Reishi is Ganoderma sinense.
It is also sometimes called Purple Reishi or Zi Zhi. The fruiting bodies can develop dark brown, purple-black or almost black upper surfaces with a glossy, lacquered appearance.
Black Reishi is a wood-decaying polypore. Instead of gills, mature fruiting bodies produce spores through fine pores on their underside.
The mushrooms are firm and woody when mature rather than soft and fleshy.
How is Black Reishi different from Red Reishi?
Black Reishi and Red Reishi are different species within the genus Ganoderma.
Black Reishi is Ganoderma sinense. It usually develops dark brown, purple-black or nearly black fruiting bodies.
Red Reishi is generally identified as Ganoderma lingzhi and typically develops brighter red, orange-red or reddish-brown fruiting bodies.
Both species:
Grow on woody substrates
Can be cultivated on supplemented hardwood sawdust
Can form antler-shaped or shelf-shaped fruiting bodies
Produce brown spores when mature
Require warm temperatures and high humidity

What substrate is best for growing Black Reishi?
Black Reishi grows particularly well on sterilised hardwood-based substrates.
Suitable materials include:

Hardwood pellets
Hardwood sawdust supplemented with wheat bran
Other clean, untreated hardwood materials
Adding a suitable nutrient supplement such as wheat bran can support vigorous mycelial growth and fruiting.
Supplemented hardwood substrate should be properly sterilised because its increased nutrient content makes it more vulnerable to contamination.

Can I inoculate a hardwood grow bag directly?
Yes. Black Reishi liquid culture can be injected directly into our Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag.
The bag contains sterilised hardwood substrate supplemented with wheat bran and includes a self-healing injection port.
After inoculation, keep the bag sealed while the Black Reishi mycelium colonises the substrate.
Direct inoculation is the simplest option for customers who do not want to prepare separate grain spawn and hardwood substrate.
Producing grain spawn first may provide faster and more even colonisation because the colonised grains create numerous inoculation points throughout the final hardwood block.
Can Black Reishi liquid culture be used on grain?
Yes. Sterilised grain is commonly used to expand Black Reishi mycelium before transferring it to a hardwood fruiting substrate.
The liquid culture can be injected into our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag.
Allow the grain to become fully colonised before mixing it with our 2kg Sterilised Hardwood and Wheat Bran Substrate.
Grain is normally used as an expansion medium rather than as the complete Black Reishi fruiting substrate.
Fully colonised grain spawn helps distribute the mycelium evenly through the hardwood material and may shorten the final block-colonisation period.
Do you sell sterilised grain and hardwood substrate?
Yes. We offer pre-sterilised wheat grain bags, sterilised hardwood and wheat bran substrate, and ready-to-inoculate hardwood grow bags.
Using prepared grain and substrate removes the need to hydrate, mix and pressure sterilise the growing media yourself.
A typical grain-to-hardwood growing process is:
Inoculate a pre-sterilised grain bag with Black Reishi liquid culture.
Allow the grain to become fully colonised.
Mix the colonised grain spawn with sterilised hardwood and wheat bran substrate.
Allow the hardwood substrate to become completely colonised.
Give the block additional time to consolidate.
Introduce warm fruiting conditions with high humidity and gentle lighting.
Manage fresh-air exchange according to the desired fruiting shape.
Keep ventilation limited for antler-shaped growth.
Increase fresh-air exchange to encourage broad shelf-shaped caps.
Harvest once the fruiting bodies are firm, deeply coloured and fully developed.

Is Black Reishi suitable for beginners?
Yes. Black Reishi can be grown by beginners, particularly when a pre-sterilised hardwood grow bag is used.
The mycelium is generally vigorous and the fruiting bodies develop slowly. Their firm, woody structure makes them less vulnerable to brief humidity fluctuations than soft mushrooms such as Oyster mushrooms.
The main challenges are:
Allowing complete substrate colonisation
Maintaining warm but stable temperatures
Providing high humidity during early fruiting
Managing fresh-air exchange
Allowing sufficient time for the fruiting bodies to mature
Controlling spore release from mature caps

How should I store the liquid culture?
Keep the Black Reishi liquid culture syringe refrigerated at approximately 2°C to 4°C until you are ready to use it.
Do not freeze it.
For the best viability, use the culture within three months of receiving it.
Before inoculation, allow the syringe to move closer to room temperature and shake it gently to distribute the Black Reishi mycelium throughout the nutrient solution.
Keep the protective cap fitted during storage. Attach a new sterile needle immediately before inoculating grain, agar or a hardwood grow bag.
How much liquid culture should I use?
The amount of liquid culture required depends on the size and type of growing medium.
For one of our sterile LME agar plates, one or two small drops are normally sufficient.
A small grain jar may require approximately 1 to 2 ml.
When inoculating our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag or Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag, approximately 5 to 10 ml can be used.
Using too much liquid culture can introduce excess moisture into the grain or substrate and increase the risk of bacterial contamination.
Does the syringe contain mushroom spores?
No. Black Reishi liquid culture contains living Ganoderma sinense mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution.
It is not a mushroom spore solution.
Because the mycelium is already actively growing, liquid culture can begin colonising a suitable medium without waiting for spores to germinate.
The culture can be used to inoculate sterilised grain, hardwood substrate or a sterile LME agar plate.
Can I test Black Reishi liquid culture on agar?
Yes. Testing the culture on agar allows you to observe its growth before inoculating a larger grain or substrate bag.
Place one or two small drops onto one of our sterile LME agar plates.
Keep the plate sealed and monitor the mycelium as it spreads from the inoculation point.
Healthy Black Reishi mycelium is generally white or cream-coloured. It may become dense, cottony or slightly leathery as it matures.
Do not open a colonised agar plate outside a clean working environment. Exposure to normal room air can introduce mould spores and bacteria.
What conditions does Black Reishi need to colonise?
Black Reishi generally colonises well under warm conditions.
Suitable starting conditions include:
Temperatures of approximately 24°C to 28°C
Darkness or low ambient light
A clean and stable incubation area
Filtered gas exchange
No direct sunlight
Properly hydrated substrate
Minimal disturbance during early growth
Research has recorded strong Ganoderma sinense mycelial growth at approximately 25°C to 30°C.
For home cultivation, staying closer to 24°C to 28°C reduces the risk of the centre of a large grain or substrate bag becoming excessively warm.
Actively growing mycelium produces heat, so the internal temperature of the bag may be higher than the surrounding room.
What does healthy Black Reishi mycelium look like?
Healthy Black Reishi mycelium generally appears white or cream-coloured.
As it colonises grain or hardwood substrate, it may develop:
Fine white strands
Cotton-like patches
Dense white growth
Thick surface mycelium
A slightly leathery outer layer
Pale yellow or tan pigmentation
Yellow or amber droplets
Areas that become firmer with age
The name Black Reishi refers to the mature fruiting-body colour. Healthy mycelium is not normally black.
Green, black, pink or strongly foul-smelling growth within grain or substrate may indicate contamination rather than healthy Black Reishi mycelium.
How long does Black Reishi take to colonise?
Colonisation time depends on temperature, culture vigour, inoculation rate, substrate density and bag size.
A grain bag may require approximately two to five weeks to become fully colonised.
A supplemented hardwood block may require approximately four to eight weeks or longer.
The visible outside of a block may become white before its centre is fully colonised. Allow enough time for the mycelium to spread throughout the complete substrate.
Black Reishi fruiting bodies develop slowly compared with Oyster mushrooms. Even after colonisation is complete, they may require several additional weeks or months to reach maturity.
Does Black Reishi need a maturation period?
Yes. A fully colonised Black Reishi block can benefit from additional time to consolidate before fruiting.
During this period, the mycelium continues breaking down the hardwood and developing a strong network throughout the substrate.
Keep the bag sealed and continue providing filtered gas exchange.
A mature block should:
Be colonised throughout
Feel firm and well held together
Contain no large loose areas
Contain no wet, uncolonised sections
Smell clean and mushroom-like
Show no spreading mould
The exact maturation period varies according to the culture, substrate and growing temperature.
What conditions does Black Reishi need to fruit?
Black Reishi generally performs well under warm and humid fruiting conditions.
Suitable starting conditions include:
Temperatures of approximately 24°C to 28°C
Relative humidity of approximately 85% to 95% during early growth
Relative humidity of approximately 80% to 90% as the fruiting bodies mature
Gentle indirect daylight or artificial lighting
Fresh-air exchange adjusted to the desired fruiting shape
No direct sunlight
A clean and stable fruiting environment
Avoid prolonged extreme heat. Excessive temperatures can dry the substrate, slow fruiting or encourage bacterial contamination.
High humidity is particularly important while primordia and soft growing margins are developing.
The fruiting bodies should not remain continuously wet. Persistent surface moisture combined with poor ventilation can cause bacterial damage.
A digital thermometer and hygrometer can help monitor temperature and humidity throughout colonisation and fruiting.
Does Black Reishi require light?
Yes. Black Reishi benefits from gentle light during fruiting.
Suitable options include:
Indirect daylight
Diffused window light
A low-intensity grow light
A regular day-and-night lighting cycle
Light helps guide the direction of the fruiting bodies and supports normal colour and cap development.
Direct sunlight should be avoided because it can overheat and dry the developing mushrooms.
Strong lighting is not required.
Can Black Reishi produce antler-shaped fruiting bodies?
Yes. Black Reishi can produce antler-shaped growth when carbon dioxide remains elevated and fresh-air exchange is restricted.
A practical antler-growing method is:
Allow the hardwood block to colonise and consolidate completely.
Leave sufficient air space above the substrate inside the bag.
Keep the top of the bag closed or only loosely folded.
Allow filtered gas exchange through the filter patch.
Maintain warm temperatures and high humidity.
Provide gentle indirect lighting.
Allow the fruiting structures to grow upwards inside the bag.
Avoid opening the bag completely during early antler formation.
Do not completely seal a bag without filtered gas exchange. Black Reishi still requires oxygen even when carbon dioxide is being retained.
How do I encourage Black Reishi to form shelf-shaped caps?
Broad, shelf-shaped caps are encouraged by stronger fresh-air exchange and lower carbon dioxide levels.
Once antlers or early fruiting structures have formed:
Open the top of the bag or make a controlled fruiting cut.
Increase fresh-air exchange gradually.
Maintain high surrounding humidity.
Continue providing gentle indirect light.
Avoid strong airflow directly against the fruiting bodies.
Allow the pale growing tips to flatten and widen.
As carbon dioxide levels fall, the fruiting structures may begin expanding into fan-shaped or kidney-shaped caps.
The caps should gradually develop the dark, glossy surface associated with Black Reishi.
How should the grow bag be opened for fruiting?
The correct method depends on the fruiting shape you want.
For antler-shaped growth, keep the bag mostly closed and leave sufficient air space above the substrate.
For shelf-shaped caps, open the top of the bag or make a controlled opening beside the developing fruiting body.
Black Reishi can also be side-fruited. A small side opening may encourage the fruiting body to grow horizontally in a shelf-like form.
Avoid removing the entire plastic bag from the substrate. Keeping most of the block covered helps retain moisture and prevents unnecessary drying.
Only open the bag once the substrate is fully colonised and ready to fruit.
Why is my Black Reishi only producing antlers?
Antler growth is normally caused by elevated carbon dioxide and limited fresh-air exchange.
This is a normal Reishi growth form and does not mean the culture has failed.
To encourage broad caps:
Increase fresh-air exchange.
Open the top of the bag.
Make a controlled opening beside the developing antlers.
Maintain high humidity after increasing ventilation.
Continue providing indirect light.
Avoid strong, drying airflow.
The tips may gradually flatten and widen once carbon dioxide levels decrease.
Why is my Black Reishi producing caps instead of antlers?
Cap development normally occurs when the culture receives stronger fresh-air exchange.
Lower carbon dioxide encourages the fruiting body to widen rather than continue growing as a narrow antler.
If antlers are preferred:
Reduce unnecessary ventilation.
Keep the grow bag mostly closed.
Maintain filtered gas exchange through the patch.
Avoid placing a fan directly beside the grow.
Retain a humid air space above the substrate.
Both antler-shaped and shelf-shaped growth are normal Black Reishi fruiting forms.
Why are the growing tips white?
White or cream growing tips are normal on actively developing Black Reishi fruiting bodies.
The newest tissue normally begins pale before gradually developing yellow, tan, brown, purple-black or nearly black colouring.
A healthy pale margin generally indicates that the fruiting body is still expanding.
As growth slows and maturity approaches, the pale margin may become narrower and the dark lacquered colour may extend towards the outer edge.
When does Black Reishi develop its dark colour?
Young Black Reishi fruiting structures may begin white, cream or pale yellow.
As they mature, they can gradually develop:
Yellow or tan bands
Reddish-brown sections
Deep brown colouring
Purple-brown areas
Purplish-black or nearly black mature surfaces
A glossy lacquered finish
The final colour is influenced by genetics, age, light, temperature, humidity and fresh-air exchange.
Do not expect the first primordia or young growing tips to appear black.
Why is my Black Reishi brown rather than black?
Black Reishi fruiting bodies can naturally range from brown and purple-brown to nearly black.
Possible reasons for a lighter appearance include:
The fruiting body is still developing.
The lacquered surface has not fully matured.
Lighting conditions affect how the colour appears.
Environmental conditions influence pigmentation.
The individual culture has natural colour variation.
The fruiting body is producing a new pale growing margin.
Allow the fruiting body to continue developing while the growing edge remains active.
The name Black Reishi does not mean that every fruiting body will become uniformly jet black.
What are the yellow or amber droplets on the block?
Small yellow, amber or brown droplets may be fungal metabolites.
They can appear when the mycelium is:
Actively breaking down the hardwood
Consolidating a mature block
Experiencing environmental stress
Becoming excessively warm
Remaining colonised for an extended period
Responding to high moisture levels
A small amount of clear or amber liquid does not necessarily indicate contamination.
Large quantities of dark liquid combined with a sour smell, slimy substrate or unusual mould colours may indicate a problem.
Why has my Black Reishi stopped growing?
Growth may stall because of:
Low humidity
Excessive temperatures
Temperatures that are too cool
A dry substrate block
Completely blocked gas exchange
Insufficient lighting
Sudden exposure to dry room air
An immature block
Unsuitable substrate
Exhausted nutrition
Contamination
Natural maturity
Check whether a white or pale growing margin remains visible.
When the fruiting body becomes fully dark, firm and woody and the pale margin disappears, it may simply have reached maturity.
Why is the fruiting body dry or cracked?
Drying and cracking can result from:

Opening the bag too suddenly

What is the brown dust around mature Black Reishi?
Fine brown or rust-coloured dust around mature Black Reishi is normally a deposit of mushroom spores.
Mature caps can release large quantities of spores, which may collect on:
The fruiting body
The grow bag
Shelves
Walls
Floors
Nearby growing equipment
Spore release is normal and does not indicate contamination.
Harvest before heavy spore production if you want to minimise cleaning.
Mature Reishi should be grown in a ventilated space away from bedrooms and frequently occupied living areas, particularly where anyone is sensitive to airborne particles.
When should Black Reishi be harvested?
Black Reishi can be harvested when the fruiting body has reached the desired size and maturity.
Signs of maturity include:
The fruiting body has become firm and woody.
The upper surface has developed a dark glossy colour.
The pale growing margin has narrowed or disappeared.
The fruiting body has stopped expanding.
The underside has formed a mature pore surface.
Brown spores may have begun appearing.
Antler-shaped growth can be harvested when the branches are firm, fully developed and deeply coloured.
Use a clean, sturdy knife or pruning tool to cut the fruiting body close to the substrate.
Reishi fruiting bodies are tough and may be difficult to remove by twisting.
How long does Black Reishi take to mature?
Black Reishi develops slowly compared with Oyster mushrooms and many other cultivated species.
After the first primordia appear, the fruiting bodies may require approximately six to twelve weeks or longer to mature.

Humidity

Can a Black Reishi block produce more than one flush?
Yes. A healthy Black Reishi block may produce additional fruiting growth after the first harvest.

Maintain moderate humidity.
Prevent the substrate from drying completely.

Later flushes may be smaller or slower than the first.
The number of flushes depends on the moisture, cleanliness and nutrition remaining in the block.
Can Black Reishi be cultivated on logs?
Yes. Black Reishi can be cultivated experimentally on suitable deciduous hardwood logs or stumps.
Potential hardwoods include:

Other clean, untreated broadleaf wood
A basic log method is:
Select recently cut, untreated hardwood logs.
Prevent the logs from drying excessively.
Drill inoculation holes in a staggered pattern.
Pack fully colonised sawdust spawn into the holes.
Seal the holes with food-safe wax.
Keep the logs in a shaded and humid location.
Maintain moisture during prolonged dry weather.
Allow sufficient time for the fungus to colonise the wood.
Wait for suitable warm and humid conditions to encourage fruiting.
Log cultivation may take one or more years and should be viewed as a long-term project.
Can a colonised hardwood grow bag be used to inoculate logs?
Yes. A fully colonised Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag can be used as sawdust-based inoculation material for suitable hardwood logs.
Once the bag is fully colonised:
Open it in a clean working area.
Break the colonised material into manageable pieces.
Pack it firmly into drilled holes in the log.
Seal the holes with food-safe wax.
Place the logs in a shaded location.
Prevent the wood from drying completely.
Outdoor log cultivation is slower and less predictable than indoor cultivation on sterilised hardwood blocks.
Can I inoculate a living tree?
Do not deliberately inoculate a healthy living tree.
Black Reishi is a wood-decaying fungus and may contribute to internal decay and structural weakness.
Use:
Dead hardwood logs
Cut stumps
Sterilised hardwood blocks
Wood sections that are no longer attached to a living tree
Do not inoculate valuable garden trees, street trees, trees near buildings or trees that could create a safety risk if weakened.
Always obtain the landowner’s permission before inoculating outdoor logs or stumps.
Can Black Reishi be grown on CVG?
CVG should not be used as the main Black Reishi substrate.
Coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum retain moisture but do not provide the woody nutrition required by this species.
Black Reishi should be cultivated on a substrate based primarily on hardwood sawdust, hardwood chips or solid wood.
CVG is not required as a casing layer because Black Reishi fruits directly from colonised woody substrate.
Can Black Reishi be grown on straw?
Straw alone is not the preferred substrate for Black Reishi.
The species is naturally adapted to decaying wood and generally performs better on hardwood sawdust or solid hardwood.
A small amount of straw or another agricultural by-product may be included in an experimental substrate formulation, but hardwood should remain the primary structural material.
For a practical cultivation process, use sterilised grain followed by supplemented hardwood sawdust.
