What is the scientific name of King Oyster?
The scientific name for King Oyster is Pleurotus eryngii. It is also commonly known as King Trumpet Mushroom, French Horn Mushroom or Royal Trumpet Mushroom.
King Oyster differs from many other Oyster mushroom species by producing large, thick white stems topped with smaller tan or brown caps. Its dense texture and substantial fruiting bodies make it one of the most distinctive cultivated Oyster mushrooms.
The final shape can vary according to temperature, humidity, lighting and carbon dioxide levels during fruiting.
What substrate is best for growing King Oyster?
King Oyster grows particularly well on sterilised hardwood-based substrates.
Supplemented hardwood sawdust containing hardwoods such as oak or beech is an excellent choice for indoor cultivation. Adding a nutritious supplement such as wheat bran can support healthy mycelial growth and the development of large fruiting bodies.
Supplemented hardwood substrate must be properly sterilised because its higher nutrient content makes it more susceptible to contamination.

King Oyster can also be cultivated on properly prepared hardwood pellets, straw-based mixtures and other suitable agricultural materials.
Can I inoculate a grow bag directly?
Yes. King Oyster liquid culture can be injected directly into our Sterile Hardwood Mushroom Grow Bag using a sterile needle and the self-healing injection port.
The bag contains a sterilised hardwood-based substrate supplemented with wheat bran, allowing the culture to be introduced without preparing and pressure sterilising your own growing medium.
King Oyster mycelium can colonise a suitable hardwood grow bag directly. However, the more traditional method is to first inoculate sterilised grain.
Once the grain has fully colonised, it can be mixed with a sterilised hardwood fruiting substrate. Using colonised grain distributes the mycelium more evenly throughout the final substrate and can provide faster, more consistent colonisation.
Can King Oyster liquid culture be used on grain?
Yes. Sterilised grain is commonly used as the first stage of King Oyster cultivation.
The liquid culture can be injected into our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag and allowed to colonise the grain, creating King Oyster grain spawn.
Once the grain is fully colonised, it can be mixed with our 2kg Sterilised Hardwood and Wheat Bran Substrate for colonisation and fruiting.
Healthy King Oyster mycelium should gradually spread throughout the grain as increasingly dense white growth. Allow the grain to become fully colonised before transferring it to the final fruiting substrate.

Using prepared grain and substrate removes the need to hydrate, mix and pressure sterilise your own growing media. It reduces the amount of specialist equipment required and can help lower the risk of contamination.
A typical growing process is:
Inoculate a pre-sterilised grain bag with King Oyster liquid culture.
Allow the grain to become fully colonised with mycelium.
Mix the colonised grain spawn with a sterilised hardwood and wheat bran substrate.
Allow the hardwood substrate to become fully colonised.
Introduce cool fruiting conditions with high humidity, controlled fresh-air exchange and gentle lighting.
Harvest the mushrooms while the stems are firm and the caps remain slightly rounded.

Is King Oyster suitable for beginners?
King Oyster can be grown successfully by beginners, although it is generally more demanding than fast-growing Oyster varieties such as Blue, Pearl or Golden Oyster.
The mycelium can colonise suitable grain and hardwood substrate reliably, but producing the characteristic thick stems and well-shaped caps requires closer control of temperature, humidity and fresh-air exchange.
King Oyster also prefers cooler fruiting conditions and may take longer to produce mushrooms than some other Oyster species.
Using pre-sterilised grain and ready-to-use hardwood substrate simplifies the process because you do not need to prepare and sterilise the growing media yourself.
The ready-to-inoculate hardwood grow bag is the most straightforward option for growers who want to inject the liquid culture directly into a prepared fruiting substrate.
How should I store the liquid culture?
Keep the King Oyster liquid culture syringe refrigerated at approximately 2°C to 4°C until you are ready to use it. Do not freeze it.
For the best viability, use the culture within three months of receiving it.
Before inoculation, allow the syringe to come closer to room temperature and shake it gently to distribute the King Oyster mycelium throughout the nutrient solution.
Always keep the protective cap fitted while the syringe is in storage. Attach a new sterile needle immediately before inoculating grain, agar or a grow bag.
How much liquid culture should I use?
The amount of liquid culture required depends on the size and type of growing medium.
For one of our sterile LME agar plates, one or two small drops are normally sufficient.
A small grain jar may require approximately 1 to 2 ml, while a larger grain or hardwood substrate bag may require approximately 5 to 10 ml.
Using too much liquid culture can introduce excess moisture into the grain, which may increase the risk of bacterial contamination. Always use an appropriate amount for the size and existing moisture content of the growing medium.
When inoculating our 2kg Sterilised Wheat Grain Bag, approximately 5 to 10 ml can be used and distributed across several areas of the grain.
Does the syringe contain mushroom spores?
No. King Oyster liquid culture contains living Pleurotus eryngii mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution.
It is not a mushroom spore solution.
Because the mycelium is already actively growing, liquid culture can provide faster and more predictable colonisation than starting from mushroom spores.
The culture can be used to inoculate sterilised grain, a suitable hardwood grow bag or a sterile LME agar plate.
What conditions does King Oyster need to colonise?
King Oyster mycelium generally colonises well under moderate temperatures.
Suitable colonisation conditions normally include:
Temperatures of approximately 20°C to 25°C
Darkness or low ambient light
A stable and clean growing environment
Gas exchange through the bag’s filter patch
Minimal disturbance while the mycelium becomes established
The grain or hardwood substrate should be allowed to become fully colonised before the bag is opened or fruiting conditions are introduced.
Colonisation time will vary depending on temperature, inoculation rate, substrate density and the amount of liquid culture or grain spawn used.
King Oyster can colonise more slowly than aggressive Oyster species such as Blue Oyster, so allow sufficient time before assuming that a clean, steadily colonising bag has stalled.
What conditions does King Oyster need to fruit?
King Oyster generally performs best under cool fruiting conditions.
Suitable fruiting conditions normally include:
Temperatures of approximately 13°C to 18°C
Relative humidity of approximately 85% to 95%
Controlled fresh-air exchange
Gentle indirect daylight or artificial lighting
High humidity is especially important while the first mushroom pins are developing. However, water should not remain continuously on the mushrooms, as excessive surface moisture can cause damage or encourage bacterial problems.
King Oyster mushroom shape is strongly affected by carbon dioxide levels. Moderately elevated carbon dioxide can encourage the characteristic thick stems and smaller caps, while stronger fresh-air exchange generally produces wider caps and shorter stems.
Some carbon dioxide retention can therefore be useful, but the grow should not become stale or poorly ventilated. Excessively high carbon dioxide may produce abnormally stretched or poorly developed mushrooms.
A digital thermometer and hygrometer can help you monitor temperature and humidity throughout colonisation and fruiting.
Does King Oyster need a cold shock?
King Oyster often benefits from a reduction in temperature when moving from colonisation to fruiting conditions.
The colonised block can be moved from its warmer incubation area into a cooler fruiting environment. This temperature change, together with increased humidity, lighting and fresh air, can help encourage pin formation.
A severe or freezing cold shock is not required. The aim is to provide a controlled reduction into the appropriate fruiting-temperature range.
Do not freeze the colonised substrate or expose it to sudden extreme temperature changes.
How should a King Oyster grow bag be opened for fruiting?
King Oyster is commonly top-fruited rather than fruited through a small side cut.
Once the substrate is fully colonised, open the top of the bag and fold or roll the plastic down so that a short collar remains around the surface of the substrate.
The collar can help retain some carbon dioxide around the developing mushrooms, encouraging the thick stems associated with King Oyster.
Do not completely remove the plastic from the substrate block. Leaving the sides covered helps retain moisture and prevents unnecessary drying.
The block should then be placed into suitable fruiting conditions with high humidity, cool temperatures, gentle lighting and controlled fresh-air exchange.
Why are my King Oyster mushrooms developing large caps and thin stems?
Large caps and thinner stems can be caused by very strong fresh-air exchange and low carbon dioxide levels.
King Oyster naturally responds to its environment. Higher fresh-air exchange generally encourages wider caps, while moderate carbon dioxide retention encourages thicker stems and smaller caps.
Using a short plastic collar around the top of the block can help retain a suitable amount of carbon dioxide near the developing mushrooms.
The mushrooms still require ventilation. The goal is controlled fresh-air exchange rather than completely restricting airflow.
Why are my King Oyster mushrooms not pinning?
Delayed pinning can be caused by several factors, including:
Fruiting temperatures that are too warm
Insufficient humidity
A block that has not fully colonised
Lack of a temperature change between incubation and fruiting
Inadequate lighting
Excessively dry substrate
An immature block that requires additional time
Check that the block is fully colonised and move it into a cooler fruiting environment with high humidity and gentle lighting.
King Oyster may take longer to initiate fruiting than some other Oyster varieties, so patience is important when the block appears healthy and free from contamination.
When should King Oyster mushrooms be harvested?
King Oyster mushrooms are best harvested while their stems are thick and firm and the caps remain slightly rounded or only partly flattened.
Avoid waiting until the cap edges curl significantly upwards. Overmature mushrooms can become softer, drier and less attractive.
Individual mushrooms can be gently twisted away from the substrate or cut cleanly near the base with a sterile knife.
After harvesting, remove any remaining stem material from the surface and return the block to suitable fruiting conditions. A healthy substrate block may produce additional flushes after a resting period.
